2016 Newburyport Fishing Year in Review! Stories, Reports, and What's new for Manolin in 2017!

January 21, 2017

Wow did this past season fly by! I can't believe my last report was mid-July, but that doesn't mean the inshore or offshore fishing was bad, in fact, it was OUTSTANDING. Before I begin my 2016 season recap, I just want to thank all of those who came to Newburyport to fish with Manolin Charters. I've made some tremendous new friends this year with whom we can share memories together forever. Thank you all for fantastic attitudes, generosity, and reminding me everyday why I love doing what I do. We had an ridiculously busy season this year and it couldn't have happened without the repeat customers, word of mouth, and referrals. Hard to be believe that next year is already year 5 and I have seen some of my early customers' kids grow up through high school and college!! I feel old now, but am thrilled to be a small part of their life that they enjoy.

So lets break down the Merrimack River charter fishing reports chronologically as always.

May - Unreal start to the season! The mass invasion of micro stripers all up and down the coast had the striper fishing community buzzing from NJ to Maine! From May 8th - May 30th (and way beyond when we started targeting keeper fish) it was utter ridiculousness. No matter the tide, time of day, wind pattern we were catching schoolie stripers at a fish per cast rate for 3 hrs straight all on super light tackle. One memorable trip in particular was when 7 year old Elle Shields caught 92 stripers on artificials on Joppa Flats....all by herself!  It is a great tune up to get back on the water with friends in a low pressure environment. The goal here is light tackle and even had quite a few customers break out their fly rods! I can't even begin to describe the mass quantity of fish that are here now. This year class of stripers will keep returning to the Merrimack River throughout their lives and are going to make Newburyport even more of a fishing destination than ever before.

June - The keeper stripers had moved in. We caught our first keeper on Memorial Day (If you want to be the first to catch a 30"+ fish, typically your best shot is Memorial Day weekend) and it was on from there. Newburyport and Merrimack River fishing was in full swing! Mackerel were in thick and fishing was great. We did have some trips we had to move due to weather throughout the month, but none the less fishing was fantastic with constant rods bending, keepers going home, and bait easy to get. Well, that was until Saturday June 25th with longtime customer JJ and his crew....Quick story about our trip....So the days leading up we had been putting a hurting on stripers, like 30 - 50 fish days, mostly because of all the tinker mackerel you want. So JJ's trip comes rolling around and, wouldn't know, you can't find a mackerel anywhere. My phone was going off with calls and texts, I was reaching out to buddies on the water, and the chatter on the radio was comical when people were describing the straight up disappearance of the Roanoke Mackerel. Luckily, we found a small school and some caught some other baits and had a great day of striper fishing. Well, the funny part of this happened about a week later when the OSEARCH (Great White Shark Tag and Release Program) posted that one of their first ever tagged Great Whites "pinged" in 30 ft of water by the buoy just outside the Merrimack River on.....June 25th. That one creature sent the mackerel beelining further offshore where we would have to venture to get our baits for the beginning of July.

Dan always seems to bring the fish with him when he comes out! Here he is tight to a big blue shark!

July - The past few seasons have shown us that July is starting to rival June for primetime Striper fishing. One of the major reasons is the baitfish abundance in our waters has been amazing the past few seasons. This year, for the first time in my adult life, we actually had pogies on a consistent basis for pretty much the rest of summer. It was really cool and led to a fantastic big striper bite later in the season. A year ago or two, the quota for commercial pogies (also called bunker or menhaden) was cut down 10%. That 10% gave us millions of fish our area has not seen in years. Let's hope it continues.

Back to the stripers. Fishing was great on the whole. We did have to run far to get bait for the first week or so,  but with the longer ride a lot of the times we saw cool marine life on the way out. You definitely learn to appreciate your lifestyle when, for example,  13 year old Nate from Ohio sees the first whale of his life, gets up close and personal with an Ocean Sunfish, catches a million mackerel at the Isles of Shoals, then has to reel a striper every two minutes for 4 hours! I love giving people an opportunity to experience a day like that.

Toward the end of the month after the moon, the big girls started arriving. We caught a bunch of 38+" from July 18th fish on including a 51" 42# and a 48" 37#. Also, I had a writer from Sport Fishing Magazine come aboard and write an article (I'll post on that in another blog) which was a really neat experience.

We began shark fishing the third week of July....and.....WOW. WOW WOW. We found a stretch of water where we were just crushing sharks. We AVERAGED 13 sharks per trip! Ok, now a few of these trips were cut short because the crew had had enough! In addition to the numbers, we finally had legit opportunities with three separate mako encounters. Each one ending in heartbreak. My god. How cool? We rarely get makos in any numbers here, but what those three fish do (A fourth, my buddy John landed a 400#er on a trip we split up into 3 boats) is allow me now to pattern them out and find out where they like to hide around here. This sharking extended well into September.

August - Great by August standards. I was offshore most of the time, but was still inshore every few days. The shark fishing remained bonkers, the striper fishing was still good but dying down a bit. early in the month I started fishing the Parker more with some great success, then all hell broke loose along the Plum Island beach front. My favorite way to fish is to slow troll mackerel, but we haven't had that opportunity the past couple years. The one thing that does suck about this fishing though is that it can be lights out/ can't miss fishing then absolutely dead, then on, then off again. Unfortunately, my time was short lived as I started football camp and the rest of the guys on the water were crushing fish well into September. Once football started, I did another striped bass and two offshore charters. Really wished I could have made it out there more, but luckily it was worth it as our team went 9 - 2 and finished as the #4 team in state (via Boston Globe and Herald)!

A few other quick notes from the 2016 season:

  • So many young kids on the boat this year! It was so great to see a new generation of younger fisherman from 4 - 12 years old putting away the stupid Xbox and iphone and embracing the outdoor lifestyle! I hope its a trend on Manolin Charters that continues.
  • Also, I had a few groups of 15 - 17 year kids who pooled up their money and came out fishing with their buddies! I thought that was super neat as well. Each time, I was surprised to see 4 "kids" and no adults. They called/emailed and booked the trips themselves and were awesome to have aboard.
  • The conservation attitude my clients showed this year in particular. Most trips weren't necessarily to fill the cooler. Most groups opting to keep only one or two 28 - 32" fish and letting bigger fish and more keepers (even if they were allowed more) go. As I grow as a guide, I really appreciate this attitude of just taking what you will eat immediately and preventing having 10 month old striper filets in the freezer. I will never forget the god awful 2014 and 2015 seasons (even tho 2015 was a little better) where fishing was very, very difficult. I never want that to happen again. That being said, I still have no problem if you want to keep your legal limit!

Newburyport Charter Fishing Report - Stripers are still GREAT, bluefish are mixing in, and shark fishing has begun!

July 22, 2016

Quick update on recent happenings...

Newburyport striper fishing continues to remain very reliable and consistent. The past weeks we are averaging more keepers per trip than before and still continue to pound on 26" - 27" stripers in the Merrimack River. For late July, this is really really good fishing. Mackerel have moved back closer to home and hopefully no more runs to the Isles of Shoals. We even have had some sporadic movement of.....BLUEFISH! However, they come and go and haven't settled down just yet. I hope they do as they are so fun to catch!

Shark fishing Jeffrey's Ledge is also in full swing and I will begin taking shark trips from here on out. If you thought stripers were fun, just wait till you pull on one of these bad Larry's.

It has been a great season so far and has no signs of slowing down. Just a reminder that I start coaching August 19th and will be limited to Sundays only from there on out so if you are thinking about charter fishing out of Newburyport please book soon.

Here are some pictures from the last two weeks (PS had issues with my phone for a few trips so if you could send me any pics you would like on the website just email them!)

Newburyport Fishing Charter - Merrimack Striper Fishing is Great and Shark Season is Upon Us!

July 5, 2016

Hey Everyone!

Sorry for the long gaps in Merrimack River fishing reports but we have been very busy out fishing and catching stripers! I'll give a quick review of some recent happenings....Striper fishing in Newburyport remains very consistent with most trips bending rods with all the fish you want in the 26" - 27.5" range with anywhere between 1 - 4 keepers in the mix with an occasional day of more keepers. It's super fun as we always use light tackle!

The Donahue boys cleaned up last Monday with 10 keepers in Newburyport! Their technique was flawless as they hooked nearly every bite they got!

The Donahue boys cleaned up last Monday with 10 keepers in Newburyport! Their technique was flawless as they hooked nearly every bite they got!

There have been blasts of some bigger class fish dropping back from Lawrence chasing the hordes of 5" herring we have been blessed with this year! Also, we have consistently running into pogies the past two weeks! We haven't got them in recent years in the numbers we have been seeing but they are BIG baits and are usually followed by BIG fish. Mackerel, however, has been a different story...it has been difficult as a few waves of bluefish have made a run in the past week and made scared them away. I know of a few bluefish that have actually been caught and experienced two bite off's myself while drifting for stripers. Hopefully they start making appearances in their "regular" spots but until then I HIGHLY suggest booking a 6.5 hour striped bass charter as it gives us time to go to where the live mackerel are at the moment.

I'm going to try to take a day next week and go scout the scene for sharks. There is still a ton of porbeagles around and even though they are super cool, I'm hoping the blue sharks move in soon. Today is July 5th and they should be in pretty solidly by next week. If you are looking to tug on one of these bad boys book a shark charter out of Newburyport! Don't forget, Manolin came in 2nd place last year in the Newburyport Shark and Tuna Tournament!

Bigger Stripers are showing up! Newburyport Fishing Charter Report

June 20, 2016

Quick little write up about the fishing. Since my last post on 6/6 we have seen more keeper striped bass, plenty of mackerel, and still catching all the 25 - 27 inch fish you want. The last week however the big girls have come out to play! With the exception of a slow night Friday, fishing has been solid and continues to improve as bigger fish move in. We had been getting smaller keepers in the beginning of the month, but the middle/end of this week produced fish in the 32 - 43" range. We are primed for things to explode this week now that we are coming off the full moon. Perfect timing as school gets out Thursday!

I have some week day openings in the next weeks and weekends are filling up the morning slots fast. Don't miss out on the action while the gettin is good!

The past week the mackerel have come in aggressively and we shifted our focus from playing around with the millions of micro schoolies and started looking for some bigger class fish. On Monday we were able to get 4-year old Grady on his first ever fish with more for good measure! I was away in DC from Tuesday - Friday but had three successful trips on both Saturday and Sunday. Getting mackerel was easy as can be and we were able to feed them to hungry stripers.

Saturday morning's incoming tide fished very well as Ellieenanne's group from Vermont landed a bunch of fish in the 26 - 27 range. The afternoon started off hot on the outgoing with Jay and Peter banging out two keepers right away along with a dozen more in the 25 - 27 in range. The wind started kicking up and made fishing at the end of the mouth impossible. Luckily, we still had fun and the guys were able to take home their limit.

Sunday was the foggiest day in the history of planet earth, but we still went out and LOADED up on tinker mackerel. Soon we were feeding them to some schoolie stripers and after a little move we banged out two nice 30 inch fish and a couple more schoolies. Unfortunately, the captain made a rookie mistake and left fish to find fish. We ended up still bending some rods on bigger 25 - 26 inch schoolies but didn't find the quality of fish I was hoping for. That's on me. But Lee's crew, as always, was great to have out, took home some meat and were able to tug on some frantic stripers on their Newburyport charter.

Striped Bass Report - Newburyport Fishing Charter

May 29, 2016

As long as the weather is clear, fishing remains excellent. The micro bass are still here doing their thing, more numbers of the 2011 year class fish have moved in (26 - 28 inches), some smaller keepers, and hordes of tinker mackerel!

Keeper stripers have been showing up in the Merrimack! This is the first charter keeper of the season!

Last Wednesday, 7 year old Elle put on a clinic and landed 91 stripers, according to her! I don't how exact that is but it was darn close! Thursday I gave a seminar on Striper Fishing for the Newburyport Harbor Marina guests, but was able to sneak out for in hour to find the season first mackerel. With the wind blowing hard east it was pretty snotty, but before I even put chum in the water I got the seasons first dozen mackerel! Friday, my client Bob and his son-in-law came out and I watched obvious seasoned vet Bob put on a clinic with the fly rod and Dan using super light tackle on the schoolies. The stiff north wind slowed the bite down from the previous days, but we still managed around 40 or so micros and had a lot of fun. Saturday, my buddy Jeff and I went out to on a mackerel freezer fill mission and it was mission accomplished. Once we had close to 250, I went on the hunt for the season's first keeper. In 90 minutes of fishing we had 15 fish up to 32 inches including Manolin's first keeper of 2016! Today, the weather man really did us in with a much stronger NE blow and raw, gross conditions. Plenty of fish around, but I think not being able to get out of the mouth to get mackerel hurt us today as we only picked up a couple 26 inch fish on dead bait. I had to cancel my Monday morning trip due to weather but will be back out with a another trip later in the afternoon.

Salisbury and Newburyport Fishing Charters - Striper Fishing is Ridiculous!

May 24, 2016

Where to begin? Oh, I know....The schoolie striper fishing has been off the charts incredible! I cant remember ever seeing this pure amount of fish in the Merrimack River. Yeah, yeah, yeah they may be small but this is a super healthy year class of fish that are EVERYWHERE! These fish are our future and I love them just as much as 40 pounders. They have been chewing no matter the tide, the wind direction, the moon phase, the time, or the lures/bait. When you are fishing in gin clear water 5 feet deep and you see a school of 50 fish right under the boat, it is nothing short of amazing. When you are deeper and the fish finder looks like this pic below for FOUR STRAIGHT HOURS you can't help but feel a little giddy. When that fish finder looks like this in 5 different spot in 5 different days, you know there is a lot of fish around. In my 20+ years of fishing the Merrimack, this spring run of micro stripers has been absolutely historic. We have had days where we just went out for an hour and caught close to 100 fish!

Merrimack River Charter Fishing

I have been out everyday since last Thursday and it has been consistent. All the fish you could possibly want. On Sunday,  I made a challenge on Facebook to catch 200 fish in a 3 hour trip and it was taken up by my buddy Jay from Stellwagen Media and his friends Maddie and Rhett from Falmouth. They had non stop action all day and the count was somewhere between 250 - 300. Absolutely nuts. They also just missed by an inch or less at some keeper fish. We were able to find a pod of bigger fish towards the last hour or so of the trip

In between the schoolie action, I took a day off shore with Mike, Hilari, and Jeremiah. We took a bunch of beautiful haddock and pollock, but the real story was the amount of 15 - 20# cod we couldn't get away from (and couldn't keep due to cod be closed) and the amount of bait out on Jeffrey's Ledge....All I could think about was shark fishing...and maybe, just maybe ....we will see some schoolie tuna this summer!

To close out the week, at the moment I have trips Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. That leaved Saturday open and will the influx of keepers that have trickled in the past 3 days and the impending mackerel invasion (I will pop out there Thursday before my trip) it is shaping up to look pretty excellent. Memorial Day weekend historically is when we start catching keeper stripers on live bait! I for one cannot wait!

Newburyport Fishing Charters - Stripers are here in great numbers!

May 15, 2016

The past week was a good one for Manolin Charters. After 12 straight days of unfishable weather, we were finally able to get out and start our season looking for schoolie stripers. Despite strong winds on Tuesday 5/10 (which is the earliest I have ever caught a striper) I was able to pluck my first striped bass in the Merrimack River in 2016. Wednesday we tried a new spot in the late afternoon and caught about a dozen in short order setting us up for the first charter of the year on Thursday.

Thursday we were met with more wind than anticipated but the fish didn't mind at all! Robb, Dean, and Mike picked away at 42 schoolie stripers all on light tackle! Fishing was consistent minus about an hour or during the tide change. The guys kept positive, kept casting and were rewarded with some great fishing at the beginning and end of their Plum Island fishing charter.

Saturday I headed offshore on my buddy's rig to catch some haddock and target a porbeagle, as some of you know my personal white whale! Once we moved spots and got to an area I have pegged for "beagles" we hooked onto one immediately. The rest of the story will be told during the your trip this summer! In the meantime, we crushed some bigger class haddock and even got a huge wolffish.

Bigger stripers moved in over the weekend as my Dad caught the first keeper from a boat I have heard about in the Merrimack River while I was offshore. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday look to be a blowout. But I'll be right back at it with trips later in the week.

Also, I want to mention the first annual "North Shore Fishing Night" being held Wednesday the 18th @ 7:00 PM at the Starboard Galley in Newburyport. My charter captains association has put this night together to be FREE to the public and include many free raffles prizes from our sponsors. If you have the time please swing by and talk some fishing!

If you are looking to Newburyport fishing charter, please call soon (978) 314 - 9397 and arrange a date as I am filling up quickly. The BEST WAY to do this is think/plan of a couple  dates beforehand that work for you and we can get you on the boat and into some fish. Don't be late as the best days are going quick. The fish are here, they are hungry, and they will only be getting bigger!

Thats all for now and next week I hope to write a report of the first keepers to be caught on Manolin Charters for 2016!
